Forming together as a shield against the assault on the arts by the economy, The Building Project consists of Seattle based emcees Dume41, Khingz, King Khazm and Specs One. This summer the group releases its album “Moving Pictures” on Fresh Chopped Beats/ Madk Productions. The album will be available from CDBaby, Amazon, Napster, Rhapsody and directly from the artists. Produced By Rok Soulo, Showbot, Khazm and Dume, the album’s gritty sound diverges from the style fans are expecting from Seattle. Prepare for something different.
One might think that this record comes out of the blue, but the members have associated for a very long time. Dume and Specs met in the projects circa 1985 where they used to freestyle, beatbox and draw comic books and graffiti together. They have been collaborating on music for years with Specs appearing on Dume’s solo and group albums. Khingz and Gabriel Teodros released the album “Sexy Beast”, which Khazm put out on his own MadK Productions under the moniker Abyssinian Creole in 2005. Specs One has been known by all the emcees involved as he has been putting out records in Seattle since 1987. Specs produced on Gabriel’s Lovework. Khazm was the catalyst for the Building Project collaboration as he had close ties with all the other artists.
The group sat down to build a project together in response to the recent violence affecting Seattle’s historically minority inhabited Central District and South End. The group sees the decimated economy as one possible source for the great tension being felt throughout the city, and wants to set an example for the youth. Cooperation and love can heal and transform a people, often taking them further than they could go as individuals.
